The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has named Minnesota Entrepreneur Mason Chang as the 2021 National Small Business Person of the Year.

The award recognizes Chang’s dedication to the creation of economic opportunity and job growth through his Minneapolis-based technology company, Oncurses.

In his five years as CEO, Chang has helped the company grow from a startup to a successful business that has created over 75 jobs and created millions in revenue.

Mason Chang’s Achievements

Chang’s success is due to his commitment to using technology to solve problems.

  • Beyond Coding: In 2020, Chang launched The Beyond Coding Initiative, a philanthropic program that helps low-income students learn coding and other technical skills.
  • Digital Solutions: Chang has built digital solutions that have allowed Oncurses to serve more than 1,500 customers around the world.
  • Investment: Chang has also been a major investor in Minneapolis businesses, helping local entrepreneurs to start and grow their own businesses.
    • The SBA’s selection of Chang for the national award was based on his dedication to innovation, job creation and community investment.

      SBA’s National Programs

      The SBA’s annual National Small Business Person of the Year awards program recognizes the accomplishments of entrepreneurs across the United States.

      In addition to recognizing Chang’s achievements, the SBA also works to provide resources and support to small business owners. Its programs include:

      • Grants – Grants are available to small businesses to help them start, grow or expand.
      • Mentoring – Mentoring programs connect small business owners with experienced industry professionals who can provide advice and guidance.
      • Loans – Low-interest loans are available for qualified small businesses.
        • The SBA also provides free resources including counseling, training and information about financing and more.
